Richmond Cross Country Starts Season With Spider Alumni Open

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men’s and women’s cross country teams will open the 2015 season on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they host the 15th annual Spider Alumni Open.

The races will be run at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va., which is also the site of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships. The Spider women’s program claimed the 2015 A-10 title at Pole Green Park last fall. 

The men’s 5k race will being at 9 a.m., with the women’s two-mile race to follow at 9:45 a.m. Richmond will be host to fellow A-10 programs, Davidson, George Mason, VCU and UMass in addition to Elizabeth City and William & Mary.

The Richmond women’s cross country team has been selected as the favorite to repeat as Atlantic 10 Conference Champions in a poll conducted of the league’s 14 head coaches, the A-10 announced on Tuesday.

Richmond, the defending A-10 champion, returns three top-20 performers from last year’s championship in Tara Hanley (4th), Courtney Thompson (11th place) and Amanda Corbosiero (16th place).

The Richmond men were chosen to finish 10th but return a talented group of upper classmen in All-Conference performers Matt McKenna and Alex Lucking to go along with Tim Gruber and a talented group of freshmen.
